Genentech's $750 Million Hillsboro Investment Strengthens Oregon's Life Sciences Manufacturing
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 20, 2026: Oregon Life Sciences, the trade association representing the state's biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medtech, and diagnostics industries, today applauded Genentech's announcement of a $750 million investment in a new device fill-finish manufacturing facility at its Hillsboro campus. The expansion, which will double the size of Genentech's existing Hillsboro facility, is expected to create 250 high-wage manufacturing jobs and approximately 200 construction jobs in Oregon, with commercial operations beginning in 2031.
The investment reflects the strength of Oregon's advanced manufacturing base, skilled workforce, and growing life sciences ecosystem. The new facility will support the production of advanced drug delivery devices, including pre-filled syringes and autoinjectors, and will strengthen end-to-end U.S. drug manufacturing capabilities, helping build a more secure and resilient domestic medicine supply chain. For Oregon, the announcement underscores the state's capacity to compete nationally for large-scale biomanufacturing investment, high-wage jobs, and long-term economic growth.

Genentech's expansion comes as Oregon continues to advance a coordinated, statewide life sciences strategy through the Oregon Life Sciences Competitiveness Task Force, organized by the Oregon Business Council and Oregon Life Sciences. The Task Force's recommendations, which directly inform the Governor's Prosperity Council and the legislative agenda of the state's newly formed Biotech Caucus, are expected to be finalized this fall ahead of the 2027 legislative session. On September 24, the Task Force will share a midpoint update on its work at the Oregon Life Sciences Annual Meeting in Portland, in a session featuring leadership from the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB). The discussion will examine how Oregon's research institutions, advanced biomanufacturing capacity, and semiconductor convergence position the state as a contributor to the nation's biotechnology supply chain and broader economic and national security priorities, a framing directly relevant to Genentech's stated goal of strengthening domestic drug manufacturing resilience. Investments of this scale also underscore the opportunity in front of Oregon this fall, to translate the Task Force's recommendations into concrete legislative action in 2027 that helps the state compete for the next major expansion, not just celebrate this one.
Genentech has operated in Hillsboro since 2006, and the campus is a critical part of the company's U.S. manufacturing network, supporting production across oncology, immunology, neurology, and other therapeutic areas. In its announcement, Genentech cited Hillsboro's infrastructure, manufacturing capabilities, skilled workforce, and nearly two decades of community partnership as key reasons for the expansion, a reflection of the long-term relationships between Oregon's life sciences companies, local communities, and the state's broader innovation ecosystem. Growth of this scale also extends well beyond Genentech itself, benefiting Oregon's broader network of suppliers, workforce and training partners, universities, service providers, and the state's emerging life sciences companies who share in the same talent pipeline and manufacturing infrastructure.
